The anticipated announcement ends weeks of speculation as to who would become Ferris' new director of athletics. The guessing game is over and Weisenburger could not be happier to return to Michigan and to take over as head of the Athletics Department at FSU.
“It’s an exciting opportunity that presents itself at Ferris State University and our family is thrilled to be returning to Michigan,” Weisenburger said. “I’m looking forward to becoming a part of Bulldog Athletics and helping to continue the solid tradition of academic and athletic success while cultivating an atmosphere of enthusiasm and pride that reflects Ferris State’s past, present and future.”
Weisenburger, most recently the position of associate athletics director for external operations at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, steps in for Tom Kirinovic, who retired this summer from the position of athletics director. The selection of Weisenburger concludes a rather speedy search that took place in the wake of Kirinovic’s retirement.
“We’re very pleased that Perk Weisenburger has accepted our offer to become the Athletics Director at Ferris State University,” Ferris President David Eisler said. “He brings a strong background of experience and is well prepared to help Ferris Athletics continue to grow, help student-athletes get a great education, and to prepare our teams for competition.”
Ferris had a large number of applicants (more than 70) for the position upon the retirement of Kirinovic. A 10-person search committee, with representatives from a number of areas across campus helped trim the field down to three finalists: Glen Krupica, senior associate athletics director for external affairs at Northern Illinois University; Derek van der Merwe, senior associate athletics director at Central Michigan University; and Weisenburger. By the time the dust settled, it was Weisenburger who emerged as the new director of Athletics.
The new FSU AD will not have a whole lot of time to settle in as the Fall 2010 semester is just around the corner and a lot of work needs to be done.
Ferris could have Weisenburger in place by early September if all goes according to plan.
